I bought a Model Y to see how we liked Electric Cars.

We didn't need a new car. But I was considering buying a Pickup (to fit into our new home in Houston). Well, I wanted an EV Truck, and they were going to be a year or so out. So why not try an EV to see if we'd like them. And while we didn't NEED a new car, we had moved from Commiefornia, and as a reward for selling our home there, and generally getting more ready for retirement -- I wanted something to acknowledge success. So Model Y until an EV pickups were ready.
So Initially, I liked the HummerEV.
In doing the research -- I decided that I didn't really trust 1st Generation GM. (Their Chevy Bolts were catching fire, and so on). Plus the math didn't work. Basically, it had the same range a Tesla with twice the battery pack size. That means it would charge half as fast. Plus it was too big for the Garage, and was going to be a long time for delivery. And there were a lot of reasons to talk myself out of it.
In the research phase, I figured out that:
- A CyberTruck was better technology. It got 50% more range with a smaller battery, meaning it would charge faster and Tesla had a much better charging network, and software to get you there. (More road trip practical).
- I wanted a self driving car. And Tesla was way ahead of GM.
- Size wise, the Tesla was big, but still smaller than the Hummer.
- The buying experience for a Tesla was zero pressure. The software updates itself at night. And so on.
So I decided to wait for Tesla.
Then I decided to buy a Model Y in the interim to see how much we liked the cars and technology.
The later announcement of the F150 didn't really change my mind. While I liked the styling and interior features better than Tesla (it's not as ugly), I didn't like the range, and it still had the efficiency, gen-1 problems, and so on.
How do I like it?[edit | edit source]
The Model Y was a brilliant car.
- It was convenient, loved charging at home and avoiding gas stations.
- I had to go out of my way to do supercharging, but it was dead simple and worked fine.
- The purchase experience was great.
- The car is virtually maintenance free.
- It has quirks. But is a great car.
My wife poo-poo'd the new car and thought it was useless expense... then she drove it, and loved it. The car is a little too big for her comfort. But she loves the zip, quietness, not having to buy gas, the incredible storage capabilities. So when she's going out, she grabs the Tesla about 80% of the time. Only if leaving the car at the airport, or I'm going to need the car, does she take her Mini.
We keep an ice chest in the back (below the deck / where the spare tire normally would be), and it makes shopping easier. It's out of the way, but if you buy cold things, you drop them in the basement, and they'll stay cool for hours. You don't have to go home right away.
It's just a great car. Best car we've ever had.
