- Charles Dickens - Dear Mr Dickens, We only accept double-spaced typescripts. With regret, we must decline your kind invitation of representation. This is satire since the first typewriter didn’t appear until Dickens as an old man. But does anyone really doubt that some pedant or buerocrat would have said it, if he and the typewriter had crossed paths earlier?
- Dr. Seuss - Dr. Seuss (aka Theo Geisel), was rejected for his first kids book, 27 times in a row. 28 was the magic number, and he went on to become one of the most famous kids book authors ever. Tenacity wins. Many publishers, movie producers and record labels lack imagination and insight. They occasionally pick winners, reject many more, and their success rates are that of monkeys throwing darts.
