As one reviewer said, it tries to be "Doctor Strangelove" for a new generation... and that's the genre it fits. A dark comedy with a lot of A-list actors, and b-roll one-liners. While the comedy is more dark than funny, it scores some real cutting observations.
Basic premise: Nobodies discover a comet is coming, and try to get the elite to do something. But it benefits few to stop it, and the ones that try can't seem to get out of their own way. The identity elected executive branch has the competence of the Biden administration. The media is as corrupt and cynical (and biased against the truth) as in the real world. You have a Steve Jobsian messiah type. And lot of jokes interspersed into a fabric that is more patchwork quilt than unified blanket. But it works as a film.
Again, with the case and production, I kept expecting Woke Lecturing -- but the message was more about family, faith, and remembering what's important in life.
Film Critics[edit source]
If you want to see leftist bias in media, you just have to look at all the examples of how far off from their reviewers are from their viewers. I use the spread as a predictor of whether I'll like a film. Big spread with audience over critics? I'm going to like it. But big spread with critics over audience? I'll usually side with audience.
Tatometer | Summary |
---|---|
Don't look up - This one hit too many good points for the far left reviewers to like it. So it got 56/77 (-21%) Reviewers to Audience. As dark comedy it wasn't the best, and it was a bit slow at parts... but the message was pretty good, and I think that's what got it deflated review scores, and higher audience ones. |
