FDR is almost universally lauded for being a vile incompetent, that extended the depression, was corrupt, and all around bad person.
FDR is loved by amorals and leftists for extending the depression, mismanaging WWII, and setting the stage for the USSR and Iron Curtain. He focused power so that he could abuse it, corrupt, vindictive, liar (betrayed most that trusted him). He ignored the Constitution and his oath of office, many of the countries worst shames happened under his watch (and by his hand/guidance).

FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) is almost universally lauded in our Liberal History Books as one of the great Presidents of the Century: man of the People, saved the country from the great depression, progressive policies, idealism and integrity, guided us through WWII, saved not the nation and entire world from tyranny, and so on.

There's a few half-truths buried in the caricature and clichés, but there's an awful lot of lies of omission and commission. I'm going to focus on the darker side of FDR, not because that's all there was to this complex man, but because we should know the bad and the good to judge for ourselves, not just be force-fed the propaganda version.

The TLDR version is:

  • He focused power so that he could abuse it, corrupt, vindictive, liar (betrayed most that trusted him).
  • He ignored the Constitution and his oath of office, many of the countries worst shames happened under his watch (and by his hand/guidance).
  • According to those closest to him, he was a lousy diplomat, a poor administrator, not scholarly, nor thoughtful, well read or even bright.
  • He was people smart (manipulator) that enjoyed playing people/groups off of each other.
  • Other than that, he was likable, mercurial, and aloof.

  • FDR/Who Was He? - He was a child of wealth and name: American royalty. He grew up out of touch with kids his own age, his classmates found him priggish and called him the "feather-duster." He was a backstabber, double-talker, and the people that knew him best, said horrible (and true) things about him behind his back. He had power, but nobody that knew him's respect.
  • FDR/Failed Lawyer shifts to Politics - Failing as a lawyer, he went into politics and found his purpose, with the help of his Family Name (and their money). The Republicans weren't interested in another racist progressive (after Teddy), so FDR switched parties and ran on the Democrat ticket for New York State Senator (1910). Pissed everyone off. Had to take a decade off. Then ran for NY Governor in 1928.
  • FDR/First Term and the New Deal - When it comes to the depression: FDR fiddled, while Rome burned. Or worse. He maligned Hoover, then copied him. He undermined the banks to make things worse while Hoover was a lame-duck, so that he could take credit for the rebound. FDR's New Deal magnified the problems, and caused the recession in a recession and turned a 30% correction into an 80% great depression.
  • FDR - Agencies - FDR modeled his business recovery on what the Fascists of Europe had been doing. Many assume that because it sounds so vitriolic that it must be wrong -- but if you doubt it, study the policies. Remember, that the Fascist were not as unpopular at the time as they later became. They were just a branch of Progressive Democratic Socialists, with a side of soft authoritarianism.
  • FDR/The Second Term - The Republicans tried to get elected in 1936 on the same platform that Roosevelt had used in 1932 -- "Cut Deficits, Reduce Spending, Eliminate Bureaucracy". The Democrats were livid, and accused them publicly of stealing their platform. The Republicans responded publicly with, "Why not, the Platform has never been used?"
  • FDR/The Third Term - FDR should have never been elected to a 3rd Term, based on tradition and accomplishments. No other President being arrogant enough to think they were worthy of serving that long, and no public being gullible enough to re-elect him. But this was still part of the progressive era, and mass immigration had lowered the IQ and American standards far enough that he was.
  • FDR/WWII - Roosevelt got his third term by scams; faking that others demanded he'd run, or lying that he'd keep us out of WWII. He didn't want a third term, but would only reluctantly accept the people demanding it of him (that he was sponsoring). While the war polled 83% against going in, he was promising to keep us out, and building up and committing acts that would get us in.
  • FDR/Executive Order 9066 - One of America's great shame's is Executive Order 9066, issued by FDR on February 19, 1942. It allowed the internment of 120,000 Japanese Americans -- basically because you just can't trust those slanty-eyed devils from the east! It also allowed the internment of German and Italian Americans as well, as they were incarcerated, just not in as great of numbers.
  • FDR - Corruption - Graft is taking profit from one's political office (or taking money for their influence). The politicians of today have nothing on FDR, not even the Clinton's. As Governor FDR stated he was against graft, and was one of the largest recipients of it in history -- both directly and through his immediate family.
  • FDR/The Holocaust - FDR knew the Holocaust was happening, but had it suppressed it from the public because he wanted the War, and didn't want it to be a war for the dirty Kike's. So he knowingly turned away refugees, and slowed the war to free the Jews, while knowing what was happening.
  • FDR/War Crimes - FDR's son told a story about Stalin toasting to the future execution of 50,000 officers without Trial (a war crime). Churchil protested, but FDR said we should compromise and Stalin should murder no more than 49,500. Which outraged Churchill further. Then FDR said not to worry, if the Russians didn't do it, the Americans would, signaling we didn't care about war crimes.
  • Roosevelt's: An Intimate History - Ken Burns disappoints with a progressive puff-piece. Teddy the Republican was almost all bad. FDR the Democrat was almost all good. And the complexities that made both 3 dimensional (instead of just caricatures), was all whitewashed off the series. I figured the format would allow PBS to do something deep and complex, it was just long and shallow.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

So what was FDR's Legacy? Sadly the facts are not close to what is taught in our schools or repeated often by people that haven't done much research.

We are sometimes taught:

  • FDR the friend to the Jews -- but not taught how many more Jews lost their lives because of his indiference to the Holocaust and their plight.
  • Many whine about the excesses of Reagan's spending, while FDR's worse behavior is often brushed over.
  • When we were taught about the Iron Curtain, and how Stalin took control of many eastern blok countries (and reign of terror on those who were enslaved), we are rarely taught about FDR (and Truman's) complacency in that.
  • When we are taught about McCarthy'ism, we usually aren't told why it happened, or FDR's managerial incompetence.
  • We're taught about the agencies he created to "try to pull us out of the depression", but less so about how much worse than made thing, and how many abuses happened in those agencies
  • There's talk about the United Nations being Roosevelt's brain-child (an idea he ripped off from the League of Nations), but they brush over how FDR had made secret agreements to give the Soviets more votes than anyone else (via puppet governments).
  • Schools talk about how FDR kept winning elections -- but not by how close they were, or which groups were on which side.

What we are not usually taught about when discussing FDR is the double-dealing and back-stabbing, one of the greediest, most self-interested, corrupt and power hungry liars to ever taint the office. When we look at a President's legacy, we should remember everything that happened under his ternure, and everything that happened afterwards because of his actions -- not just the side that makes progressives feel good about themselves (like interning the Japanese). The dirt and shame is important, so that we can learn from our mistakes, instead of electing more of them.
