Freakonomics on Cursive

I listen regularly to the Freakanomics Podcast (Radio). I normally really enjoy Dubner and Freakanomics, but it can be a little too superficial, and miss deeper teaching opportunities. And they did a two part series on writing. Starting with, “do we really need cursive anymore”, some light discussion on cursive, it was an interesting podcast, but just for curiosity. Mostly it was a setup for the next week’s podcast on "i Pencil" which was far more interesting.
On the first podcast on cursive writing, I definitely fall into the camp that kids should have enough familiarity to read cursive (and maybe do a little writing, if forced), but beyond that it’s useless in the modern world. It would be better to spend the time doing something more valuable like touch typing, or learning shorthand. When I was a kid, I invented my own printing/writing system (basically teehand shorthand, with simplified characters like Palm's graffiti). But the podcast only did a high level flyover on some of these topics.
