I didn't hate it, or love it. But I was a bit bored by the original trilogy. I loved the first movie, which was groundbreaking in effects and storyline... but they became less interesting to me as they kept rehashing the same ground in each sequel. 18 years for this sequel didn't change that.
The plot itself isn't bad. The acting isn't horrible. I noticed some nice film subtlety in reflections, or around the edges of perception that was like, "Oh, cool effect/foreshadowing". The action is a tribute to the first films. And it's sort of the point of storytelling: live in the world you built. This isn't a reboot, just a re-visit. But while this world was interesting for the first film, by the 4th it's like, "Yeah, robotic vampire bugs that live off human energy/life force, got it"... the premise still doesn't make any sense as a way to extract energy, or why you just can't keep people sedated, or why gaining superpowers in a virtual world even matters. And the same effects that were once fresh, have become cliche'd over the intervening decades. The slow-fast action is more disjointed. Doogie Houser as Dr. Evil? No Laurence Fishburne. 2 1/2 hours to tell a 45 minute story? Yawner.
I'm not upset I watched it... but I expect I wont ever think about it after a few months. No impact on my life.
So the initial movie storyline was a cute initial reveal. And I love the idea of red-pilling people to get them to wake up to political realities they are ignoring. So it's great to watch the first one for getting the pop-culture. But by the 4th? It's a bit long, dated, predictable... and everything in the film was done before. It's getting 66/63 (Reviewer/Audience) scores, which hints that the public isn't really enamored with it either. But if you have HBO Max, it is free (or at least part of the subscription).
