The NRA is like the ACLU once was, except specifically for the 2nd Amendment.
The NRA is like the ACLU once was, except specifically for the 2nd Amendment. They are not a vile organization that hates kids, in fact, they spend most of their resources on training gun safety. They do not oppose common sense gun control, most progressives just don't know what that looks like. And they don't own politicians, they don't have enough money or members to do either. Those that claim otherwise are uninformed haters.

Examples

The fascists always hate liberty... and organizations that defend it. So the left naturally goes after the NRA with a venom they usually reserved for supporting abortion, their Jim Crow laws, or the persecution of smokers, SUV drivers, or Texans.

  • 2018.04.11 NRA, Russians and Newsweek - Newsweek claimed there were 23 Russian-linked "donors" to the NRA. Or about 1/100th as many as to Obama, Biden, Hillary. It turned out to be a nothing burger, it was $2,500 total, over 3 years and most likely just ex-pats or diplomats abroad. No evidence the NRA knew or was soliciting. But it generated front page headlines and back page corrections for the rubes.
  • Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis Rental Cars - After the Parkland, Florida school shooting, Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis rental cars all decided to drop the NRA as a discounted provider. No one I knew with an NRA membership had ever used the service, or knew it existed - so I don't think it'll matter or lead to backlash, because no one cares.
  • Charlton Heston - I read this speech months ago, and just wanted it to be a part of my site. It says so much for those who care. The following is the text of Charlton Heston, speaking to the Harvard Law School Forum on 'Winning the Cultural War,' ~ Tuesday, February 16, 1999.
  • Swalwell v. Dana Loesch (NRA) - Swalwell pretended he doesn't know who Dana Loesch is (NRA lead spokesperson)... after tweeting about her on multiple other occasions. She pointed out he'd dodged questions about how to confiscate all guns. Eric butt-hurt condescendingly claimed, "he doesn't debate down"... and came across sexist asking the top Woman to get her boss. Dems don't hold their side to the same standards.
  • United & Delta Airlines - After Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, United and Delta airlines virtue signaled their opposition to the Constitution by removing the NRA's group travel program. The NRA pointed out this "benefit" wasn't used much anyways. (I never knew). But a bunch of companies ganging up for publicity makes me think less of them, not more.
  • YETI Coolers - YETI Coolers cut off ties to the NRA Foundation (the shooting sports division), but wouldn't say why (coincidentally timed with Delta and REI dropping the NRA after school shooting). The NRA's open letter, lead to a backlash amongst shooting enthusiasts. Yeti claimed NRA/shooters misunderstood. The NRA's reply to that sounded a lot like: {cough:bullshit!}.

While the term goes back 100 years, the history is summed up well by Sharyl Attkisson.

Organizations
Organizations that I felt the need to comment on (more often on the negs than the positives). But there's good/bad in all.

Guns
Guns are a tool. Gun prohibition is like the prohibition on drugs, alcohol or crime.
