Tesla surprised everyone in 2019 by finally shipping the $35,000 low-end model 3 (originally planned for 2012 and $20-30K). They shocked everyone by eliminating their retail stores: all cars to be bought on-line.

Facts
- They still had showrooms to let people experience cars or the brand. But you didn't buy in most of those.
- If you adjust for a few years of inflation, and factor in the soon to end EV incentives, the $5,000 miss in price is almost non-existent. Though the lowest end model was hard to get, and the 3 was more like a $45K car.
- But the 3 also came in a lot more performant (Fast) than people expected. And while the fit-and-finish was never top quality -- the reliability, User Interface, OTA (Over-the-air) updates, service, and charging network were offsetting lots of concerns.
