The Expanse (2015)

Good hard core Sci Fi brought to a TV Series, where Earth, Mars, and the Belt fight out their divergent interests.
This is good ol' Sci Fi: where hundreds of years from now, the Earth, Mars and the Astroid Belt (and outer moons) are colonized but have divergent interests and histories -- and have become unique cultures. Throw something new (a catalyst) into the mix, and there's going to be some action. Good stories, characters, and sticking with their tech.

It got a 94/92 on Rotten Tomatoes because both reviewers and viewers liked it. Good characters aren't pure good, bad aren't usually pure evil. There's a lot of nuance, perspective, agendas. And different characters that you can associate with. Game of Thrones in Space.

The story starts smaller in Season 1 -- missing young woman and a detective trying to find her. Then there's the biohazard that's the backdrop for the first 3 seasons (while it was on ScyFy channel). Season 4-6 were taken over by Amazon Prime, and become much more about the inter-human frictions than the outside force, and became a better (but a little different) series because of it. I preferred the human angles more than the unknown outside thing.

They added and lost characters over time. The story arcs, big and small, were often interesting. Shohreh Aghdashloo was incredible and the best character throughout. And I'm not just saying that because she's Iranian with a cool voice. Her storylines were well written, and she just has a class/dignity that was perfect. Other characters were worth following as well. I so much prefer this kind of SciFi to the Star Wars grandiose but shallow, or the faux-Utopia of Star Trek. Much less one-dimensional.
