| None of this is to pretend that Dan White was a saint or that he deserves celebration as a martyr. He was an honest protector personality, that took so seriously his defense of others that he lost himself when he couldn't protect others the way he wanted and so committed some tragic actions; harming others and himself. It's a tragedy that we shouldn't celebrate, just understand and look to avoid in others. |
Moscone had a poorly managed convention center named after him. Harvey Milk is deified as a noble gay martyr. Willie Brown became Mayor. Diane Feinstein became demented Senator for life. Dan White is vilified as a homophobe who used the "Twinkie Defense" to get off light. And Jim Jones (Democrat activists/bundler) killed himself along with 918 others.
There are the fictions that Democrats have told, and Hollywood haigiagraphies have been made that demonize White, raise to sainthood the victims, and tried to distance Jim Jones as some looney religious cult leader... but as you investigate the real story (not the Hollywood, Left, or Wikipedia variants of it), you find out that Moscone was corrupt, Milk was a backstabbing scumbag that was killed for political betrayal and not homophobia, Jim Jones was illegally swinging elections and a Kingmaker in the DNC apperatus (with connection up to the Carter's), White was dealing (poorly) with real depression brought on by the corruption/abuse of politcal power around him and later killed himself party over the abuse and harassment from the left.
So popular beliefs and what really happened are at odds. And Willie Brown, Moscone Center, various tributes to Harvey Milk are testaments to how corrupt the Democrats and the left are, that they would not be embarassed by any associations with these folks, but they would turn them into heroes. The Democrat/leftist narrative would spin Romeo and Juliet into a tale about the parents being victims of their children's insensitivity and betrayal, when the truth is it was a tragedy for all involved.

The far left editors would never allow anyone to tell the story why a lifetime civil servant White, would be so outraged to end the lives of two of his coworkers. |
In the Wiki haigiography of Milk and Moscone and the character assasination of White, you find fragments of truth burried without context. If you play Jr. Detective and jump around, you can stitch it together: there was voter corruption supplied by Jones for Moscone. Moscone abusing power with cronyism and corruption (and had allies in far left Feinstein and Milk). The city was shifting radical left, and freezing out moderates like White, and that combined with depression lead to tragic events. |
In the end, Milk and Moscone were both corrupt far left extremists, that were the beginning of the end for Fog City. Jim Jones was making sure far left radicals were getting appointed using his cult to corrupt elections. Harvey Milk and Moscone were benneficiaries and bullying and freezing out anyone that cared about anything other than the activists and radicals.
That spun the depressed White from healthfood fan, into junk food and binge eating... and he first quit his job. Then regretted it because of his honor and duty to city, and when trying to get it back, Moscone was never going to let an opportunity to screw over a moderate and further his agenda.
The city was shifting radical left, and freezing out moderates like White, and that combined with depression lead to tragic events. That doesn't make White a good guy -- but it sure changes the character of what happened. Milk isn't worthy of films that fail to point out his flaws or his agendas. Nor does Moscone deserve convention centers named after him. But alas, it's SF, and they have their own version of history. And thus, Moscone and Milk will be treated with undeserved reverence, while they try to bury what could have driven White over the edge to first kill, and later to commit suicide. Following Moscone and Carter ally, Jim Jones in his descent into darkness.
