There's a lot of details and nuance, which means both sides can cherry pick things that prove to themselves what they want to.
But the facts are:
- that none of them were there -- and the most outraged seem outraged over things that happened elsewhere.
- They want to broad brush that this is a pattern -- but not by any of the participants, but of injustice in general.
- He's an athlete and other athlete's have gotten off: burn the witch!
- He's white, male, and going to a privileged school: burn the witch!
- Other judges showed bad judgement and were too lenient (or this judge may have been too soft in one other case), so we need to make examples: burn the witch!
None of which has anything to do with this case. But guilt of this crime isn't as important to the mob, because being that Brock and the Judge were both privileged white males, everyone knows they're guilty of something!
The prosecutor demanded 14 years of prison (presumably to make a name for himself). While the Parole Board asked for a more reasonable first offense punishment of 6 months (and 3 years probation and the scarlet letter of conviction and being labelled a sex offender for life), more in line with reason and the state's guidelines.
Brock's Dad (Dan Turner) wrote a letter to the Judge before sentencing, complaining that the prosecutor was going overboard. And expounded Brock's accomplishments, virtues and remorse, had one line which said 14 years was a, "steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life."
That "all men are rapists" crowd was apoplectic. That this guy's Dad would protest his son's ruination, for being convicted on hearsay, and little hard evidence of doing something she may or may not have wanted to do at the time but later regrets? That was too much for them. They went from ballistic to foaming at the mouth, and had to crucify Brock and anyone involved in the case.

People v. Turner |
---|
Brock Turner is alleged to have molested a girl (they were both drunk, no evidence). The judge ruled exactly as the Parole Board suggested. The mob recalled/ruined the Judge (Aaron Persky) for following the state's guidelines and not destroying more of Brock's life (in the name of tolerance). No Justice in the face of angry know-nothing students. |

Brock was involved in a consensual drunken encounter with a co-ed, but since she was too drunk to consent and may have passed out, he was guilty, and the snowflakes were mad that his life wasn't MORE ruined. The problem was there wasn't ever evidence in this case, no history of priors. But white male athlete in Stanford, California? Burn the witch! |
