My views on the various Hamburgers out there.
I like a good burger, heck I like an OK burger. To me, it's a great meal by itself, a little protein, some carbs, all in a filling and convenient to eat package. What's not to like? But how do they compare? Here's how I rate the various burger joints out there.

In-N-Out[edit source]

They are privately owned, and all about the factory-line burger experience. All burgers (and ingredients) will meet their quality standards, they have one of the most limited menus (even with the secret menu -- e.g. Animal Style: which is mostly about grilling it in the onions and thousand island dressing). The only choice for vegetarians is grilled cheese (and fries). They are a great-tasting classic fast-food burger, and the best prices/value. And they can get people through very quickly, despite the regularly long lines. For me, the fries are uncooked, the shakes/malts are great, but if you want anything else (like a different condiment or variety of burger style), or don't like thousand island dressing, you're going to be out of luck. If you love a plain hamburger/cheeseburger with thousand island dressing, this burger is one of the best.

Whataburger[edit source]

They have franchises, and are a fast food establishment, fast, efficient, clean and tasty. But with a wider menu than an In-N-Out, and the quality varies a little but, from every bit as good, to close. The only choice for vegetarians is grilled cheese (and fries). They are a great-tasting classic fast-food burger (w/Shakes and Fries), not quite as inexpensive as In-N-Out, but a lot more options to customize -- with peppers or spice, or different personalities/seasonal burgers. (Green hatch chili, etc). Their spicy ketchup is delicious. If you want a fast food burger, it's a reliable go to. If both were equidistant, I'd go to Whataburger more often than In-N-Out because of the broader menu.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

  • Fast-Food: Whataburger is a staple (with In-N-Out in places that I can't get Whataburger). In-N-Out tasted fresher more often... but Whataburger has a better meat taste (gamier? Grass fed?), feels bigger and more filling, and has a better variety.
  • Bisrto'ish Fast-Food: 5 Guys is like a home made backyard BBQ burger. Very good, a few condiments. Smashburger does a lot more ingredients (varying the buns, or different personalitied burgers). Smash is tasty, and fun variety. 5 Guys is a better burger (and I like the peanuts), but Smash had a wider menu for vegetarian wife, and seemed to have better customer service/staff where I was at, so I tended to go there more.

Just a burger

I invited a friend to go for a burger, then had to clarify it meant "just a burger". He was OK with it... but a little perplexed at the added clarification. What else would it mean? This is my story, of why I act like a teenage boy and titter to myself whenever someone says they want a burger.
